Injured driving instructor says student hit him on course

A defensive driving course teacher says he sustained injuries to various parts of his body while teaching a course after an obstacle course driver hit him.

On May 28, Brent R. Shownes filed a lawsuit against William A. Kehoe in St. Clair County Circuit Court.

Shownes says he was teaching a defensive driving course at Southwestern Illinois College in parking lot M3 on Jan. 25 when Kehoe, who was driving in a left/right obstacle course, began approaching Shownes.

"The automobile driven by the defendant, William A. Kehoe, struck the plaintiff, Brent R. Shownes, as a proximate result, in whole or in part, of the negligence of the defendant, William A. Kehoe," the suit states.

Because of the collision, Shownes suffered pain, permanent disability and disfigurement and incurred medical costs, according to the complaint.

Kehoe was negligent by driving too fast, by failing to keep a proper lookout ahead and by failing to stop or slow down to avoid a collision, the complaint says.

Shownes is seeking a judgment in excess of $15,000, plus costs.

Brad L. Badgley of Belleville will be representing him.

St. Clair County Circuit Court case number: 09-L-279.
