Accident victims sue driver in St. Clair County

A Belleville woman has filed suit individually and on behalf of her minor son, alleging they both sustained multiple, serious injuries after a collision in Swansea.

Sororial C. Cotton claims she and her minor son, Darreon K. Matlock, were riding in a 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan Mary L. Mosley was driving south in the 2600 block of North Illinois Street, about 20 feet north of Applebee's, on Oct. 7 at about 11:28 a.m.

At the same time, Eric P. Johnson was driving a 2009 Dodge Journey owned by Alamo Financing north in the 2600 block of North Illinois Street, according to the complaint filed May 5 in St. Clair County Circuit Court.

Suddenly, Matlock's Dodge crossed the southbound lane, entered the turn lane and struck the Dodge Journey, the suit states.

Because of the accident, Cotton claims she sustained severe and permanent injuries to her head, face, neck, mouth, teeth, shoulders, trunk, abdomen, back, spine, arms, legs and feet and lost income.

Matlock sustained injuries to his head, face, neck, mouth, teeth, shoulders, trunk, abdomen, back, spine, arms, hands, legs and feet, according to the complaint.

Both Cotton and Matlock incurred medical costs, experienced pain, suffering, disfigurement and disability and are unable to live a normal life, according to the complaint.

Mosley was negligent by failing to yield the right-of-way, by failing to keep a proper lookout, by failing to sound her horn, by failing to keep her vehicle under control and by failing to reduce her speed, the suit states.

Johnson negligently failed to yield the right-of-way to Mosley, failed to keep a proper lookout, failed to sound his horn, failed to keep the vehicle under control and failed to reduce his speed, Cotton says.

In the four-count suit, Cotton is seeking a judgment in excess of $200,000, plus costs and other relief the court deems just.

She is represented by Rhonda D. Fiss of The Law Office of Rhonda D. Fiss in Belleville.
