Rear-end accident in Granite City is subject of suit

A Madison County man has filed suit against a Granite City man, alleging he was injured after a rear-end collision.

Taquan Bell claims he was stopped in traffic while driving east on Fehling Road in a school zone in Granite City on Sept. 5, 2007, when Norman Soechtig, who was also driving east, hit the rear of his car.

Because of the collision, Bell sustained injuries to his head, back, neck, chest and right hip and suffered a cervical and thoracolumbar strain, according to the complaint filed April 17 in Madison County Circuit Court.

He also suffered severe pain and tenderness in his head, neck, back and right hip, numbness and tingling in his left lower extremity and a decreased range of motion in all planes and hypertonicity in all three areas of his spine, the suit states. In addition, Bell says he suffered severe pain and an impaired ability to enjoy life and incurred medical expenses.

Soechtig was negligent by failing to keep a careful lookout, by failing to properly yield to other traffic having the right-of-way, by failing to pay attention to the road, by driving too fast and by failing to swerve or slow down before the collision, according to the complaint.

Bell is seeking a judgment in excess of $50,000, plus costs and other relief the court deems just.

He is represented by Steven V. Stenger of St. Louis.

Madison County Circuit Court case number: 09-L-392.
