Woman claims injuries in East St. Louis accident

A St. Clair County woman is suing a man, alleging she was injured after he failed to stop at a light.

Ayisha A. Scruggs filed suit against Robert J. Diehl April 9 in St. Clair County Circuit Court.

The complaint says Scruggs was stopped at a traffic light at the intersection of West Main and North 89th Street in East St. Louis in her 1992 Honda Accord on April 5, 2008, when Diehl, who was driving his 1993 Saturn SI west on West Main Street, hit the back of her car.

Scruggs claims that because of the accident she sustained injuries to her neck and backbone and suffered muscle and tissue damage.

She also experienced pain and suffering, incurred substantial medical expenses, lost wages and benefits, suffered mental anguish, depression and emotional distress, suffered loss of enjoyment of a normal life and lost her ability to engage in normal activities, according to the complaint.

Diehl was at fault because he drove too fast for traffic conditions, failed to reduce his speed to avoid a collision and failed to concentrate on driving, the complaint states.

Scruggs is seeking a judgment in excess of $50,000, plus costs.

David Cates of Goldenberg, Heller, Antognoli and Rowland in Edwardsville will be representing her.

St. Clair County Circuit Court case number: 09-L-184.
