Multicar accident on Poplar Street Bridge is subject of suit

Two Missouri residents filed suit against a man and a woman, alleging they were seriously injured in a multivehicle accident that occurred in St. Clair County.

Ada Perkins was driving her vehicle west on Interstate 55/70 near the Poplar Street Bridge with her husband, Percel Perkins, next to her as a front-seat passenger on May 18, according to the complaint filed April 7 in St. Clair County Circuit Court.

At the same time, Printess Flenoid unexpectedly veered into Darrell Griffin's lane, the suit states.

That caused Griffin, who was also driving west on the same road, to lose control of his car as he changed multiple lanes suddenly. As he was switching lanes, Griffin collided with multiple vehicles, including the Perkins' vehicle, the suit states.

Because of the accident, Ada and Percel Perkins say they suffered injuries to the various bones, joints, muscles, nerves and systems of their head, neck, back and arms, incurred medical costs and experienced pain and suffering.

The St. Clair County Circuit Court found Griffin guilty of violating an Illinois statute because he drove too fast and endangered the safety of people on the road, according to court documents.

In addition, the Perkins say Griffin was negligent by failing to keep a proper lookout, by failing to stop and by failing to maintain control of his vehicle.

Flenoid negligently drove too fast, failed to keep a proper lookout, changed lanes suddenly and without warning and failed to maintain control, according to the complaint.

In the eight-count suit, the Perkins are seeking a judgment in excess of $400,000 and unspecified exemplary and punitive damages, plus costs and other relief the court deems just.

They are represented by Christopher Allen of Fox, Goldblatt and Singer in St. Louis.

St. Clair County Circuit Court case number: 09-L-177.
