MLK Bridge accident subject of suit

A Cookeville, Tenn., woman has filed suit against a pair of St. Louis women, claiming she received face, head, leg, neck, back and arm injuries after the vehicle one St. Louis woman was driving crossed the median and collided with her vehicle.

Erica T. Petty was driving her 2001 Chevrolet Impala east on the M.L. King Bridge in East St. Louis on Oct. 15, 2006, at 2:40 a.m., according to the complaint filed Oct. 14 in Madison County Circuit Court.

Alexis R. Williams was driving a 2005 Pontiac Sunfire owned by Paula Granberry west on the same bridge at the same time as Petty when she lost control of the vehicle and crossed the median, eventually colliding with Petty's car, the suit states.

In addition to her injuries, Petty has lost wages, experienced pain and suffering and has sustained a permanent disability and disfigurement, according to the complaint.

She claims Williams was negligent because she drove too fast, failed to properly control her vehicle, failed to decrease her speed, failed to give an audible warning, failed to drive on the right side of the road, failed to drive in her designated lane and drove recklessly.

Granberry had "a duty to entrust the possession and operation of her vehicle only to those drivers with adequate skills, competency, training and experience to operate it safely," the suit states.

Petty claims Granberry violated her duty by allowing Williams to drive her vehicle when she should have known it was not safe, failing to instruct Williams on the safe operation of the vehicle and allowed Williams to operate the vehicle without adequate supervision.

Petty is seeking a judgment in excess of $50,000 but not more than $75,000, plus costs.

She is represented by Donald M. Flack of Flack Law Office in Wood River.
