Court security officer settles defamation suit against Venice

A Madison County court security officer has settled his defamation suit against the city of Venice.

Harold Wilson, Jr. filed suit against Venice in December 2007, alleging Venice published to personnel at the Madison County Sheriff's Department a document stating he could possibly be in custody at the Venice Police Department.

Wilson claimed the statements made by Venice on Dec. 6, 2006 were false and defamatory causing injuries to his reputation.

He claimed the city knew the person they had in custody was in fact not him and made the statements with actual malice, justifying an award of punitive damages.

Venice denied all allegations.

On Sept. 24, at a case management conference, both parties notified Madison County Circuit Judge Daniel Stack that a settlement had been reached in the case.
