Pedestrian struck by car in crosswalk sues city

A man who was hit by a car in a Granite City crosswalk filed suit against the city seeking damages in excess of $50,000.

Steve Callison filed the suit in Madison County Circuit Court alleging Granite City failed to use reasonable care to keep the public intersection in a reasonably safe condition for the use of the traveling public.

According to the complaint filed Sept. 13, Callison was struck by a vehicle at the intersection of St. Clair and Wayne Street on Nov. 22, 2006.

Callison is only seeking damages from the city; he does not name the driver of the car that hit him as a defendant.

He also claims the city was negligent by failing to inspect and inquire whether the public intersection was in fact safe for the public walking pedestrians.

Callison further alleges the city improperly placed a traffic signal at the intersection because it failed to provide "maximum light" to users of the crosswalk.

According to Callison the accident caused severe injuries including permanent brain damage which caused pain and suffering and medical expenses.

He is represented by Charles Stegmeyer of Belleville.

The case has been assigned to Circuit Judge David Hylla.
