Pitocin IV caused severe pain, suit claims

Belleville Memorial Hospital

Memorial Hospital of Belleville and a nurse are named in a medical malpractice lawsuit filed by a woman who claims she sustained IV infiltration while delivering a full term infant.

Trecia Lash alleges that on July 29, 2005, the hospital and nurse Debra Sakho failed to recognize her distress after she complained of severe pain at the intravenous infusion site in her left hand.

According to a suit filed July 16 in St. Clair County Circuit Court, the defendants are allegedly negligent for failing to check the patency of the infusion site, failing to remove the infusion line, failing to diagnose a complication of IVI Pitocin and failing to inform attending physicians of Lash's complications, among other things.

Lash claims she has been unable to perform household chores or care for herself or her children. She also claims she has lost the opportunity to earn income.

"Plaintiff's relationship with her husband and her enjoyment of life was damaged and diminished," the complaint states.

Mark Lash, Trecia Lash's husband, is seeking damages for loss of consortium.

"Mark Lash has been deprived of the services, support, society and consortium of his wife, he has provided support and nursing care to her and will in the future do the same," the complaint states.

The Lashes are seeking in excess of $150,000 in damages. They are represented by James P. Lemonds and Rachel L. Roman of Simon Passanante of St. Louis.
