Saint Anthony's named in med mal complaint

Joyce Cooper filed a 10-count medical malpractice case against Saint Anthony's Health Center and several of its doctors alleging that she suffered a stroke as a result of their negligence.

Cooper claims that her family physician sent her to the emergency room at Saint Anthony's where various tests including a cardiac catheterization were performed.

She claims that during the catherization, doctors could not engage the left coronary artery despite multiple attempts.

"Defendants had significant difficulty during said cardiac catheterization," the complaint states.

According to the complaint filed in Madison County Circuit Court May 30, after Cooper woke up from the procedure, she began having vision problems and focusing problems and was ultimately diagnosed with a stroke.

Cooper claims the defendants negligently performed the catheterization, failed to properly utilize the left coronary artery without success, failed to prevent a brain infarct, failed to properly and timely treat the brain infarct, and performed the test when it was not necessary for her treatment.

Cooper claims as a result of the alleged negligence, she sustained permanent injuries, endured pain and suffering, disability, loss of a normal life and medical expenses.

Represented by Michael Glisson of Alton, Cooper is seeking damages in excess of $500,000, plus costs and attorney fees.

The case has been assigned to Circuit Judge Andy Matoesian.
