Med mal suit filed against Troy family physician

Richard Hunsaker

Mary Jo Guinn

The estate of Larry Dean Hinnen filed a wrongful death suit against Dolores Cantrell, M.D., of Troy Family Health Center in Madison County Circuit Court May 14, alleging Cantrell deviated from the standard of care in treating Hinnen.

The suit also names Jim Miller as a defendant.

According to the suit, Hinnen went to see Cantrell and Miller on May 11, 2005, for the treatment of chest pain, arm pain, dizziness and shortness of breath.

The estate alleges the doctors deviated from the standard of care by negligently failing to order an EKG, EKO, and a stress test on May 11, 2005. The estate also claims Cantrell failed to refer Hinnen to a specialist.

"Hinnen was denied the appropriate interventions resulting in his death on May 12, 2005," the complaint states.

His estate, represented by his wife Lorna, alleges she and her two children have been deprived of Larry's companionship and society.

Represented by Stephen Evans of St. Louis, Hinnen's estate is seeking damages in excess of $200,000, plus costs.

The case has been assigned to Circuit Judge David Hylla.

Last May, after a nine-day medical malpractice trial, a Madison County jury delivered a defense verdict, ruling Cantrell, a family practitioner, met the standard of care in treating William Hoppe, II.

Pamela Hoppe, as special administrator of the estate of William Hoppe II, filed suit against Cantrell on Feb. 27, 2004, claiming she misdiagnosed her husband's unstable angina on July 18, 2003, which caused his death the next day.

In the last trial, Richard Hunsaker and Mary Jo Guinn of Heyl Royster in Edwardsville represented Cantrell.

Hunsaker said, "I do not believe that Dr. Cantrell ever personally treated Mr. Hinnen."
