Hospital patient claims identity stolen by employee

Doris K. Haas of Trenton claims her personal information was stolen by a St. Louis University Hospital employee while she was hospitalized at various times over a three-year period.

In a lawsuit filed Feb. 3 in St. Clair County Circuit Court, Haas claims Doris Fields of Belleville applied for credit cards and made purchases in her name. Many of the transactions took place in St. Clair County, Haas alleges.

Haas was a patient at St. Louis University Hospital at various times from 1998 to 2001.

Represented by Jon E. Rosenstengel of Belleville, Haas is seeking a judgment not to exceed $75,000 in her two-count lawsuit. St. Louis University is named as a co-defendant.

Haas claims the hospital and university are negligent for allowing Fields to have access to her personal information. She also claims the defendants failed to document all people who accessed her personal information.

"She has suffered mental anguish and psychological damage due to her identity being stolen," the suit claims. "She has suffered an aggravation of her underlying health problems."
