Teacher sues union for tripping on dangerous step

East St. Louis Federation of Teachers Local 1220

On her way to a teachers union meeting two years ago, Barbara King tripped over a step and became seriously injured from the fall.

Seeking in excess of $50,000 in damages, King filed suit against East St. Louis Federation of Teachers Local 1220 in St. Clair County Circuit Court Aug. 31.

The incident took place Sept. 2, 2003, at the union hall on Bunkum Road in East St. Louis.

According to the complaint, the teachers' union allowed the step to remain unfinished which caused a dangerous condition. The defendant also failed to warn her of the step's condition or repair it.

She claims injuries to her left shoulder and elbow, medical expenses, pain and suffering, lost wages and an impairment of future earnings.

King is represented by Belleville attorney Kirk Caponi of Williams, Caponi and Associates.
