Belleville neurologist subject of wrongful death suit

Southern Illinois Neurologic Institute in Belleville

Belleville Neurologist Guy Burrows, M.D. and Southern Illinois Neurologic Institute were the targets of a wrongful death suit filed in St. Clair County Circuit Court Aug. 19.

Mary Collins alleges Burrows failed to properly treat her late husband's neurological disease, over prescribed corticosteroids, failed to sufficiently taper the steroids in a timely manner, and failed to use other forms of treatment.

Collins' complaint does not specifically state what her husband's illness was.

Corticosteroids are a group of anti-inflammatory drugs similar to the natural corticosteroid hormones produced by the cortex of the adrenal glands. Some conditions treated with corticosteroids are asthma, allergic rhinitis, eczema and rheumatoid arthritis.

Collins claims as a result of Burrows' alleged negligence her husband died in September of 2004, depriving her of his love, companionship, support.

She also claims that prior to his death, Fred Collins suffered permanent pain, mental anguish, disability, disfigurement, lost wages, and was permanently prevented from attending to his usual affairs and duties.

Represented by Thomas Keefe of Belleville, Collins is seeking damages in excess of $300,000 plus costs of the suit.
