Lawsuit alleges negligence in Godfrey fire

A man is accused of negligence in a fire that allegedly caused significant damage to a Godfrey building.

Miroslawa N. Figueroa Trust U/A 7/2/2008 filed a lawsuit Sept. 23 in Madison County Circuit Court against Frank Jusufi, also known as Feto Jusufi.

According to the complaint, the Miroslawa N. Figueroa Trust was the legal owner of commercial real estate at 5407 Godfrey Road. The trust allegedly leased a portion of the property to Jusufi.

The Miroslawa N. Figueroa Trust contends a fire severely damaged the premises on July 19, 2012. The "causation of the fire was traced to the electrical equipment and refrigeration units installed by the defendant," the lawsuit reads.

The Miroslawa N. Figueroa Trust accuses Jusufi of negligence for allegedly failing to properly install and maintain refrigeration units and associated electrical wiring. The trust asks to be awarded more than $500,000 to compensate for the fire damage and loss of property value.

Attorney Carol L. Cagle of Alton represents the trust.
