California woman sues Pfizer over Zoloft use in St. Clair County

A California woman is suing over claims her daughter was born with birth defects due to her use of Zoloft while pregnant.

Trinity Crawford, a minor, by and through her next friend and natural mother Deana Crawford, filed a lawsuit Aug. 13 in the St. Clair County Circuit Court against Pfizer Inc., Greenstone LLC, formerly known as Greenstone Ltd., Roerig S.A. and Pfizer R&D Cortex District.

According to the complaint, Deana Crawford was prescribed and took Pfizer's and its defendant subsidiaries' drug sertraline, sold as Zoloft, while pregnant, and her daughter was born with life-threatening congenital birth defects. The complaint states the defendants conducted a campaign of misinformation to sell Zoloft to doctor's offices for the treatment of, among other things, depression during pregnancy, while hiding information about the possibility of serious side effects to a fetus.

The defendants are accused of strict product liability, breach of express warranty, negligence, negligent design, negligent pharmaco-vigilance, misrepresentation by omission, failure to warn, negligent misrepresentation, fraud and misrepresentation, fraud by concealment, breach of implied warranties and gross negligence/malice.

The Crawfords are seeking more than $50,000 in damages. They are being represented in the case by attorneys John J. Driscoll, Gregory J. Pals, and Christopher J. Quinn of The Driscoll Law Firm P.C. in St. Louis.

St. Clair County Circuit Court Case No. 14-L-594.
