An insurance company claims it paid one of its insureds nearly $20,000 after a fire destroyed part of her home.

State Farm Insurance Company filed a lawsuit Aug. 13 in the Madison County Circuit Court against Electrolux Home Products.

In its complaint, State Farm claims it provided an insurance policy to Patricia Avery for her home at 1604 Bremen Ave. in Granite City. On April 10, 2012, Avery's home sustained significant fire, smoke and water damages when a dryer manufactured by Electrolux caught on fire, according to the complaint.

Due to the fire, State Farm paid Avery $18,340.63 for damages, the suit states.

State Farm blames Electrolux for causing the fire, saying it negligently designed the dryer, designed a defective dryer, failed to inform the plaintiff of the problems associated with the clothes dryer and failed to warn of the defective design of the dryer.

State Farm seeks a judgment of more than $525,000, plus costs, attorneys' fees, pre- and post-judgment interest and other relief the court deems just.

It is being represented by attorney Matthew M. McArthur of Evans and Dixon in St. Louis.

Madison County Circuit Court case number 14-L-1101.
