Carpal tunnel surgery performed when it was not necessary, suit says

A medical malpractice complaint has been filed against a Belleville surgeon alleging that a carpal tunnel procedure was performed when it was not required.

Plaintiff Samuel Hood says that he has suffered permanent partial paralysis of his right hand, palm, thumb and first and second fingers as a result of surgery performed by Dr. Richard Hehmann on June 28, 2012.

According to the complaint filed June 19 in St. Clair County Circuit Court, Hehmann also allegedly impinged and invaded Hood's median nerve, as well as failed to stay on the ulnar side of the median nerve during surgery.

Hood seeks in excess of $50,000 in economic and non-economic damages.

He is represented by David Duree of O'Fallon.

St. Clair County case number 14-L-511.
