First quarter MC asbestos stats show Napoli firm filed most

A total of 364 asbestos cases were filed in the first quarter of 2014 in Madison County – representing a possible decline in filings if compared to last year’s record-breaking figure of 1,678.

In a review of the new suits, New York-based Napoli Bern Ripka Shkolnik, which opened a local office in Glen Carbon in 2012, leads a crowded pack of plaintiff attorneys bringing suit in the busiest asbestos docket in the nation.

Of the total brought through March 28, 197 of the cases were filed by firms or attorneys not indigenous to Madison County – or 54 percent of the total.

Napoli filed 90 cases or 25 percent of the total:

-94 percent of its claimants suffer lung cancer or 85 in total. Napoli filed more than 66 percent of all lung cancer cases during this period.

-89 percent of its claimants are non-Illinoisans or 80 in total

-In 2013, Napoli filed 548 cases representing 33 percent of all asbestos. 92 percent of the firm’s cases were lung cancer or non-mesothelioma cases.

The Simmons firm of Alton, which had been the leading filer of cases in Madison County until last year,  brought nearly as many as Napoli in the first quarter - 88 total cases or 24 percent of the total:

-81 percent of its claimants suffer mesothelioma or 71 in total

-80 percent of its claimants are non-Illinoisans or 81 in total

-In 2013, Simmons filed 364 cases representing 22 percent of all asbestos. Approximately 80 percent of its cases were mesothelioma.

Of the 364 cases filed in the first quarter of 2014:

-65 percent or 236 were mesothelioma cases

-89 percent or 323 were non-Illinoisans

Other out of state firms and first quarter statistics:

-Maune Raichle: 66 cases, 99 percent mesothelioma

-SWMK: 20 cases, 65 percent mesothelioma

-O’Brien: 10 cases, nine were mesothelioma

-Shrader: nine cases, all mesothelioma

-Richardson/Patrick: two cases

Local firms and first quarter statistics:

-Gori: 59 cases, 97 percent mesothelioma

-Flint: 10 cases, 60 percent non-mesothelioma

-Perica: five cases, all non-mesothelioma

-Goldenberg: four cases, two mesothelioma

-Bilbrey: one case
