Applicant passed over sues Wood River claiming she was most qualified for clerk position

A former city of Wood River employee has filed a lawsuit against the city, alleging she was not hired for a job despite being the most qualified candidate for the position.

Antonia Bunt filed suit March 31 in the Madison County Circuit Court against the city of Wood River.

According to the complaint, Bunt had worked as an administrative clerk for the city’s Parks and Recreation department for more than 10 years when her position was eliminated on Jan. 30. As a result, she was laid off, according to the complaint.

On Feb. 12, Bunt applied for a different and newly open administrative clerk position within the city’s public services department, the suit states.

Although Bunt met the minimum requirements for the position, the city did not hire her, the complaint says.

Because of her job loss, Bunt lost wages and her health and retirement benefits, the complaint says.

Bunt is seeking a judgment of more than $100,000, plus costs and other relief the court deems just. She is being represented by Shari L. Murphy of The Law Offices of Shari L. Murphy in Wood River.

Madison County Circuit Court case number 14-L-504.
