Man blames prostate cancer on testosterone treatment

A man has filed suit against his doctor, alleging he developed prostate cancer after the doctor prescribed him testosterone to treat his erectile dysfunction.

Billy Staggs filed suit March 6 in Madison County Circuit Court against Saima Ali MD and St. Anthony’s Physician Group.

According to the complaint, Ali prescribed to Staggs Depo testosterone. Later, Staggs developed prostate cancer, experienced great mental and physical pain and suffering, was kept from attending to his ordinary affairs and incurred medical costs, according to the complaint.

He blames Ali for causing his injuries, saying he negligently failed to order PSA levels or to perform a digital rectal examination in a timely manner, failed to order PSA levels prior to initiation of testosterone injections and failed to discontinue testosterone injections after an elevated PSA level was found.

Staggs is seeking a judgment of more than $100,000, plus costs. He is being represented by Matthew R. Chapman of Becker, Schroader and Chapman in Granite City.

Madison County Circuit Court case number 14-L-354.
