Hertz asks for vote

To the Editor:

When I first put my name on a ballot in 2002, I learned that politics can be a meaner profession than law enforcement. Yet even a decade in politics could not have prepared me or my family for the pack of lies and political smears my opponent is spreading in this campaign.

These attacks are that much more painful coming from someone I long considered a trusted colleague and friend. John and I have been friends for well over a decade, and shared many great times together with our families. Only this last July, John and his wife, Amy, celebrated my daughter’s marriage with us. In May, our families vacationed together.

This week, John sunk so low as to exploit the passing of one of my family members in an attempt to score political points. Enough is enough. I am deeply saddened to see my old friend and colleague has decided to run a smear campaign just because he decided he wants to be a politician. I am calling upon John to end the false attacks before it is too late to restore his honor and integrity, and to regain the trust of his friends and the people of Madison County.

I kept my promise to run a positive campaign because I am certain that you – the voters of Madison County – already know who I am. For over four decades, it's been my privilege to protect the community where I got married, raised my children, and became a grandfather. But my work is not done. On March 18th, you will be faced with a choice in the Democratic Primary. My record speaks for itself, but I am once again asking for your vote for the privilege of serving as your County Sheriff.
