Applications for Fifth District vacancy due Jan. 31

An application process to fill a vacancy in the Fifth District Appellate Court that will be created upon the retirement of Justice James Wexstten on Jan. 29 has begun.

Attorneys in good standing and residing in the Fifth District have until Jan. 31 to submit an application to Justice Lloyd Karmeier.

The person appointed to fill the vacancy will serve until the position is filled through the November 2016 general election.

According to a press release from the Illinois Supreme Court, Karmeier will form a special committee to evaluate and interview applicants before making a recommendation to the Supreme Court to fill the vacancy.

The appointment will terminate Dec. 5, 2016.

The Fifth Judicial District is comprised of 37 southern Illinois counties. They are: Alexander, Bond, Christian, Clay, Clinton, Crawford, Edwards, Effingham, Fayette, Franklin, Gallatin, Hamilton, Hardin, Jackson, Jasper, Jefferson, Johnson, Lawrence, Madison, Marion, Massac, Monroe, Montgomery, Perry, Pope, Pulaski, Randolph, Richland, Saline, Shelby, St. Clair, Wabash, Wayne, Washington, White, Williamson and Union.

Applications can be obtained from Karmeier's Nashville office or at any of the chief judges in the Fifth District.
