Cabelas issued summons to answer amputated thumb lawsuit

Retailer Cabelas received a summons to answer a Madison County lawsuit filed by a man who claims he lost his thumb after using a crossbow he was told was the best and safest.

Cyril B. Korte filed a lawsuit against Hunter’s Manufacturing Company doing business as Tenpoint Crossbow Technologies and Cabela’s Retail May 25.

Korte had purchased a Tenpoint Phantom CLS crossbow in November 2009 from a store in Hazelwood, Mo.

Cabelas has 30 days from June 25 to answer the summons from its office in Jefferson City, Mo.

Korte claims he was using his crossbow to hunt deer on Nov. 12, 2011. As he fired the crossbow at a deer, the bow string from the crossbow struck his left thumb and amputated it, his complaint says. Korte went to see doctors, who were unable to replace his thumb.

He seeks a judgment of more than $50,000, plus attorney’s fees and costs.
