Columbia accident caused by intoxicated driver, suit claims

A woman claims she sustained head, neck, back and left wrist injuries after an allegedly intoxicated driver failed to stop at a red light and struck her vehicle.

Renee Chassere Theis filed a lawsuit Dec. 12 in St. Clair County Circuit Court against Ronald E. Waddy.

In her complaint, Theis claims she drove her 2008 Dodge north on Route 3 near its intersection with Admiral Weinel Boulevard in Columbia on April 6. She attempted to make a left turn after being given a green arrow when Waddy, who was driving south on Route 3, failed to obey a red light and struck Theis’s Dodge, according to the complaint.

In addition to her injuries, Theis incurred medical costs, experienced pain and suffering, lost wages and experienced a diminished quality of life, the suit states.

Theis blames Waddy for causing the collision, saying he negligently failed to obey a traffic-control device, drove while under the influence of alcohol, failed to keep a proper lookout and drove too fast.

Theis seeks actual damages of more than $50,000 and punitive damages of $100,000.

John H. Leskera of Leskera Law Firm in Collinsville will be representing her.
